NY Times Endorsement Summary By Grassroots for Greenburgh A major upset may be in the offering. In an editorial in The New York Times Westchester Section, the Times endorsed Bill Greenawalt for Supervisor in the Town of Greenburgh in the upcoming Democratic Primary on Tuesday, September 13th. The Times states: The challenger, William Greenawalt, is a courtly corporate lawyer with broad political experience, though he has never won elective office and is not nearly as well known as his adversary. In a town where all political discussion seems to begin with and eventually circle back to the subject of Mr. Feiner, Mr. Greenawalt says he is running to end the Feiner era once and for all. The Times gives Mr. Feiner his due for thirteen years of service, but understands that the growing opposition to Mr. Feiner is not to be ignored. Mr. Feiner usually wins with little opposition in his heavily Democratic town. But these are tougher times. His own party is fed up with him, with a majority on the Town Council frequently opposing his initiatives, egged on by a hard core of Feiner foes who go to meetings, file lawsuits and otherwise do their best to keep him in check. A secession movement has been brewing in the town's six villages, a result of simmering disputes over taxes and spending. People in the party establishment say he is self-centered, vindictive and a poor manager - hence this primary battle, which will be the de facto election, since there is no Republican candidate. The editorial points out that Mr. Feiners undoing may relate to his positions/opposition to some key issues facing the Town and to his penchant for gimmicky governance. Mr. Feiner's critics point to a costly lawsuit over a fallen tree that caught the town badly underinsured; his failed - and some say inappropriate - attempts to defeat an expansion of the library; and what they call his increasing unwillingness to tackle big-picture problems, like neglected infrastructure, while obsessively promoting himself and tending to small-bore issues raised by every constituent who corners him at the supermarket. The Times concludes there is weariness in Greenburgh and notes that: It seems unlikely that Mr. Feiner's brand of cornball politics would continue under the patrician Mr. Greenawalt, who is 71, a veteran of political involvement and government service going back to Lyndon Johnson's administration. He is a lifelong Greenburgh resident and says, with some emotion, that he is deeply worried about the direction the town is taking under Mr. Feiner. .For the sake of peace in the valley, for a different set of eyes on old problems, and to liberate Mr. Feiner to extend his energy and talents into other realms of public service, this page endorses William Greenawalt.
